Armor protects you from harm by raising your maximum vigor. A suit of armor can belong to one of these three categories: light, medium, or heavy. You can only benefit from one suit of armor at a time.
Light armor grants +4 vigor and takes 1 inventory slot.
Medium armor grants +8 vigor and takes 2 slots. While you wear medium armor, your mobility only benefits from half your Grace. You gain 1 poise.
Heavy armor grants +12 vigor and occupies 3 slots. While you wear heavy armor, your Grace cannot contribute to your mobility and it is locked at +2. You gain 2 poise.
The vigor granted by armor is part of your maximum vigor while you wear it. This means armor also increases your recovery rate. When you remove armor, reduce both your maximum and current vigor by the amount granted by the armor, to a minimum of 1 vigor.
A suit of armor occupies a number of inventory slots while worn. Its appearance is up to you: medium armor might be a mail hauberk, brigandine, or a mixture of mail and plate. What matters mechanically is the protection it provides, not its individual pieces.
Armors of better quality increase your maximum vigor by +4 for each step above crude. Consult the table below when in doubt.
Armor Light Medium Heavy
Crude +4 +8 +12
Fine +8 +12 +14
Superior +12 +14 +18
