Basics
The game utilizes four time frames to contextualize the fiction. This section briefly describes these time frames, but you can find the full rules for each frame under their sections. Don't worry if you see a term you don't recognize: all the concepts listed here are explained more thoroughly in later sections.
The encounter frame is used during combat encounters or other high stakes scenarios where the seconds matter. An encounter round lasts about 10 seconds, and each character can take a turn which is made up of 3 encounter actions. During encounters you might...
Strike with blade or spell.
Move a short distance.
Hurl a bomb.
The exploration frame lets you explore an isolated location, such as a cave, dungeon, or large ruin. During the exploration frame, a round is measured as about 30 minutes. Each group, such as the player's party or a roaming band of bandits, can take a turn where they can perform 3 exploration actions together. While exploring you might...
Cast an incantation.
Uncover a hidden threat or secret passage in a cave.
Move on to a new room or location.
Take a moment's rest.
The game is centered around the use of the frames listed here. They are useful tools to structure the pacing of a game session and list the rules for common activities during play. If you are the Judge, feel free to move on from a frame once it is no longer useful.
The journey frame is used to track the progress of an expedition. A journey round takes about 8 hours. Like exploration, the group acts together with a shared pool of three actions. During journeys you might...
Forage or hunt for food.
Take a night's rest.
Traverse great distances.
Get lost in the wilds.
During travel, such as when journeying or exploring, it is more comfortable to use natural language rather than game lingo. Discuss and strategize as normal, state your intentions, and let the Judge confirm the approriate activity.
The haven frame takes place in your haven. A full round lasts 24 hours, where each character has can undertake their own activities. During a haven round you might...
Consort with friends and loves ones.
Undertake projects.
Take a day's rest.
Retrain to change some of your advancement choices.
Solve disputes in your homestead.
Study a topic.
